Celebrate International Literacy Day

Learn more about Pikes Peak Library District’s adult literacy and ESL programs. Please join us at a dessert reception to celebrate the publication of the 2008 literacy writer’s journal Stone Soup, honor LitSource volunteers and adult learners, and educate others about literacy issues affecting adults in our community.

    Call for Artists

    Artists – here’s a chance to have your art seen by another segment of the city – Library users!

    The Pikes Peak Library District Art Evaluation Committee will be jurying art for future shows in Library galleries. Interested artists should submit five pieces of art in show-ready format (matted, framed, and wired).

    Enjoy activities for all ages, including live music, dancing, refreshments, 1930s costumes, games and crafts for children, and a tree planting event by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

    Third Anniversary Celebration at Briargate Branch

    Briargate
    The Briargate Branch is having a party on Saturday, September 6, to celebrate three great years serving the Briargate community.

    Our theme is Remember When: How People Had Fun in the 1930s. We chose this theme to tie in with the 2008 All Pikes Peak Reads selections, which are The Grapes of Wrath and The Worst Hard Time. Join us for a day-long party with programs, games, refreshments, and an ice cream social. The festivities begin at 10:00 a.m. with a Corvette car show in the parking lot and continue until 2:00 p.m. when we’ll serve ice cream on the veranda. We hope to see you here!

    Remember When: How People Had Fun in the 1930s

    Games on the Veranda all day including hopscotch, tops, string games and checkers. Cookies, popcorn and lemonade all day. Door prizes and much more!

    10:00 a.m. - noon: Corvette Car Show

    11:00 a.m. - noon: Local author, musician, and historian Mark L. Gardner (right) will present cowboy songs and poems. Included will be song selections from the film version of The Grapes of Wrath.

    1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.: Square Dance for Kids: Join the folks from Dance Masters as they teach kids (and parents) popular dances from the 1930s, including the Hokey Pokey, the Chicken Dance, and the Limbo.

    2:00 p.m.: Ice Cream Social on the Veranda

    Mobile Library Teen Summer Reading Program 2008

    At the Mobile Libraries this summer over 150 teens registered for the PPLD summer reading program “Summer Tour 2008.” Sixty-six finishers received the rockin’ t-shirt –WELL DONE, EVERYONE!! Henna Skin Art programs were offered at the Falcon and Peyton stops with 27 participants learning to apply their own henna tattoos.

    Pictured below are Jessica Macklen and Chris Macklen, Henna art attendees. Also pictured is Cristina Nagy; she was so pleased to receive her t-shirt that she immediately donned it for a picture!

    Eight teens volunteered as Summer Reading assistants, giving over 168 hours of their free time to help with the program on the Mobile Libraries. If you should see them at your regular stop, please express your appreciation to these dedicated volunteers. Thank you!

    Monument Branch named Colorado Library of the Year

    Monument Branch
    Pikes Peak Library District’s Monument Branch has won a prestigious award from the Colorado Association of Libraries (CAL). It is receiving CAL’s Colorado Library of the Year Award for 2008.

    Recognition will occur at the CAL Conference Awards Banquet on Friday, November 7, at the Marriott Denver Tech Center.

    Recap: Teen Battle of the Bands

    The third annual Teen Battle of the Bands was a hit! Over 400 people attended the event in Acacia Park on Saturday, August 2, to hear five local teen bands compete. All five bands were wonderful and showed amazing talent!

    The winning band, Uncharted, won studio time from Green Mountain Studios and a $100.00 gift certificate from Music Exchange.

    PPLD would like to extend a special thank you to all of our sponsors including Nice Guy Sounds for providing sound, Pikes Peak Blues Community for providing a judge, Music Exchange and Green Mountain Studios for providing grand prizes, and Front Range BBQ for providing gift cards for our judges.
