Fundraiser for Memorial Cancer Center

This coming Saturday, July 14, will be the 16th Annual Run for Hope 5K run/3K walk at 7 AM in Memorial Park. This fund raiser benefits that Memorial Health System Cancer Center Circle of Hope Fund, which provides assistance for cancer patients undergoing treatment at Memorial Hospital. Volunteers needed for National Cancer Institute Study

The National Cancer Institute (NCI), a federal agency that is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the George Washington School of Public Health, would like to talk to women who are providing care for a family member or friend with cancer. The study is interested in the care giving experience and coping mechanisms.

If you are:

  • Female
  • Between the ages of 31 and 80
  • Currently providing care for someone over the age of 20 with cancer
  • OR you provided care for someone over the age of 20 with cancer at end of life within the last year

Please call them toll-free at 1-888-249-0029, Monday through Friday, between 9 AM and 5 PM EDT. Participating in this study involves a total of 15-20 minutes by phone.

Living Beyond Breast Cancer Teleconference

Your New ‘Normal’: Moving on after breast cancer treatment is a nationwide teleconference presented by Living Beyond Breast Cancer that will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM MDT (12:00 PM to 1:30 PM EDT) on Monday, May 7, 2007. This teleconference is intended for women who have completed initial treatment to focus on how to care for yourself and move on with your life after breast cancer. Some of the topics that will be covered include:

  • Managing the short- and long-term physical, psychological, emotional, social and economic effects of breast cancer
  • Creating a “survivorship care plan”
  • Finding support
  • Communicating with healthcare providers
  • Getting good follow-up care
  • Making lifestyle changes to improve your quality of life and reduce your risk of recurrence

New name and logo for the Komen Foundation

To celebrate its 25th year, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has made some updates to most notably their name and logo. The nonprofit organization is now known as Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and with a new logo, the organization is heading into 2007 with a new advertising campaign, a revamped website, and www.25komen.org, which allows people to create an online network of friends and family to raise awareness of breast cancer.

Sister Study Recruiting Participants

The Sister Study, which is being conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences of the National Institutes of Health, is recruiting participants for the only long-term study of women aged 35-74 whose sister had breast cancer.
The purpose of this national study is to learn how environment and genes affect the chances of getting breast cancer. Currently almost 35,000 women are enrolled in the study, with a goal of having 50,000 women enrolled by the end of 2007. This wide reaching study incorporates women of different generations and from various racial and ethnic groups and geographic regions of the United States and Puerto Rico.

Femara® Improves Cancer-free Survival in Early Breast Cancer

According to the results of a clinical trial published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, post-surgery treatment of early breast cancer with the aromatase inhibitor Femara® (letrozole) results in better cancer-free survival than treatment with tamoxifen. For more information, click here.

Simple Steps To Healthy Living…

A Wellness Series for Women With Breast Cancer…
A 5-week wellness program which explores simple, enjoyable and gentle ways to establish and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Program content includes realistic goal-setting, easy stress-management techniques, healthy nutrition – including a discussion of herbals, supplements and vitamins, enjoyable exercise and movement and a final session on looking forward and how to incorporate course content into everyday life for a healthy outcome.

Program dates: Tuesdays, January 9 through February 6, 2007
Time: 5:30-7:30 pm
Location: Breast Care Center, Printers Park Medical Plaza

Herceptin® Receives New FDA Approval

The FDA approved the use of Herceptin® (trastuzumab) as part of a treatment regimen containing doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide and paclitaxel (chemotherapy) for the adjuvant treatment of HER2-postive, node-positive breast cancer on November 16. Pathways to Wellness

Memorial Hospital is offering a free event for Breast cancer survivors. The workshop will be help on Saturday, Nov 4th from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Topics covered include: Moving Toward Health (Expressive Dance and Dru Yoga) and You are what you eat (Simple steps to healthy eating and What you need to know about Vitamins, Herbs and Supplements.)
