Put your family’s legacy into words

Linda Weaver ClarkeWhat is your family’s legacy? Each of us has a story from our ancestors, or even our own to tell. If these stories are unwritten, how will our children know their heritage? It is up to us to document these experiences. Turn your family history into interesting stories, something your children will be proud of and learn from.

Author Linda Weaver Clarke will offer four Family Legacy Writing Workshops on how to turn history into words. The Old Colorado City Branch and Monument Branch will also host ongoing Family History Writing Classes. You can register for all of these offerings and get more information through the links below.

To bring their stories into All Pikes Peak Reads 2008, readers will present the letters written, accompanied by music of the time and images of the writers and their artwork.

“Meet Private Brown” at Fountain Branch Library

Don’t miss “Meet Private Brown”, January 17, 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fountain Branch!

The Library will start off its monthly local history series with this special presentation, performed by William Thomas of the Pikes Peak Library District’s Special Collection department. Thomas will assume the character of Private John Brown, wearing authentic military uniform of the period. John Brown was a member of Zebulon Pike’s famous expedition of 1806.

The Pike Bicentennial web site summarizes:

“Little is known about Private John Brown, other than that he was a private–even though he was in his 50s during this expedition. He died in St. Louis aged 86. Later in the expedition, while the men were suffering terribly in the Wet Mountain Valley in late January 1807, he would openly grumble, and say what most of the rest only thought. Pike threatened him with “instant death” if he heard any more complaining.”

The presentation is sure to be not only informative, but entertaining and should be of interest to all families with school age children and up.

Call the Fountain Branch at 382-5347 for further information.
