National Free Comic Book Day and Art Career Fair

Free Comic Book DayMay 2 is National Free Comic Book Day. Pikes Peak Library Distrcit will partner with Bargain Comics to hand out free special edition comic books at the library.

Pick up a free book, and explore careers in the arts. A local comic book artist will also join us for a drawing workshop. The following events will be held at East Library (5550 N. Union Blvd.) in the community meeting room.

11 a.m. – 3 p.m.: Pick up free comic books.

Noon – 2 p.m.: Art Career Fair with the Bemis School of Art, a web designer, architects, landscape architects, civil engineers, art teachers, a cartoonist, an interior designer, and a web designer.

2 – 3 p.m.: A manga and graphic novel drawing workshop with local published author and illustrator E. Winfield (work at right), author of If You Want to be a Pirate.

Morning Missions with the World Affairs Council

The Library and the Colorado Springs World Affairs Council invite you to presentations featuring world class presenters speaking on global issues. This month, Marybeth Peterson Ulrich will discuss “Generals and Politicians: Issues in Policy and Strategy in the Bush and Obama Administrations.” Ulrich is Professor of Government and the General Dwight D. Eisenhower Chair of National Security Studies at the U.S. Army War College.

These presentations are offered free to young people ages 14-18 in the East Teen Center at East Library. They include breakfast and a chance for teens to interact with superb speakers brought to the area by the WAC. The programs will also be simulcast on The Library Channel, Comcast 17, and instant messaging with a teen librarian and the speaker will be available. Space is limited; to RSVP, email dvazquez@ppld.org.

Teen Poetry Workshop with DragonsWing

Teens, come roll out your rhythms! DragonsWing is coming to help you write, express, and revel in the way of the word — however it’s spoken: rhyme, rap, sonnets, or slam. Let us show you how to take your song to the street… or the sky.

DragonsWing is a consortium specializing in training and teaching the art and craft of poetry.
