Makerspaces

PPLD has two makerspaces: Make and Make II at Library 21c and MAKE @ East.

What is a Makerspace?

The PPLD makerspaces were established to promote creativity, ingenuity, and entrepreneurship. This space supports lifelong learning and realization of ideas in a new way through technology and hands-on fabrication.

Laser Cutter/ Engraver Badging Class

When: Sunday, April 23, 2017 - 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Where: Library21c -1175 Chapel Hills Drive at Make II (Messy Maker Space)

Group badging for the Laser Cutter/ Engraver. After this training patrons will be "badged" to use the Laser Cutter/ Engraver during Open Hours.

Image Transfer: Making Art out of Photographs

When: Sunday, April 23, 2017 - 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Where: East Library - 5550 N. Union Blvd. at EA Makerspace

In the class Image Transfer: Making Art out of Photographs participants will learn how to create photo transfers using simple techniques such as hand sanitizer and gel medium. Each participant is encouraged to bring personal photographs to work with during the class.

All supplies will be provided for the class.

Ages 16 and up. Registration is required.

MAKE @ East Open Hours

When: Monday, April 24, 2017 - 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Where: East Library - 5550 N. Union Blvd. at EA Makerspace

During Open Hours MAKE @ East is available for patrons to work on their own projects while a trained PPLD staff member is present. Equipment and supplies are available on a first come basis.

All patrons in the space must be at least 9 years old. Ages 9-11 must be accompanied by a guardian at all times. Parent/guardian supervision is welcome for all minors over age 12.

Maker Monday: Woodburning Kit

When: Monday, April 24, 2017 - 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Where: Sand Creek Library - 1821 South Academy Blvd. at Sand Creek Meeting Room

Popsicle stick bokmarks. Use one of the library's woodburning kits to MAKE an amazing project. Children under 12 must be with an adult.

Library Explorers Make

Make II Open Hours

During Open Hours, Make II is available for patrons to work on their own projects while a PPLD staff member is present. Equipment and supplies are available on a first come basis. Patrons must be badged to use a machine during a separate appointment before being able to use the machines in open hours. To inquire about badging, please call 719-884-9800, x 6364.

Maker in Residence Studio Hours

Come visit with our current Maker in Residence, Barbara, and talk with her about fusion collage while she works on her project.

MAKE @ East Open Hours

During Open Hours MAKE @ East is available for patrons to work on their own projects while a trained PPLD staff member is present. Equipment and supplies are available on a first come basis.

All patrons in the space must be at least 9 years old. Ages 9-11 must be accompanied by a guardian at all times. Parent/guardian supervision is welcome for all minors over age 12.

Afinia 3D Printer Badging Class

When: Tuesday, April 25, 2017 - 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Where: Library21c -1175 Chapel Hills Drive at Make II (Messy Maker Space)

In this class, you will learn all the steps required to run the Afinia 3D Printer using sample 3D Models provided in the class. Three 3D printers will be available during this session, so be prepared to partner up!

Additional Notes:
- Bring your library card to get badged for using the 3D Printer during Make II Open Hours.
- Children 9-11 must be accompanied by an adult. Children under 9 may not be in the Makerspace.
- Because of the short printing time, we cannot accommodate custom 3D models during this session.

Studio 21c Camera and Lighting Class

When: Tuesday, April 25, 2017 - 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Where: Library21c Special Rooms-1175 Chapel Hills Drive at The Studio

Basic introduction to studio camera. Completion of course will allow you access to studio equipment and camera check-out. Must have already taken the 101 orientation and safety course. Course lasts approximately 2 hrs. Patrons 9-11 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Simple Robotics Open Lab

When: Tuesday, April 25, 2017 - 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Where: Library21c -1175 Chapel Hills Drive at Make (Clean Maker Space)

Learn simple robotics coding using various robots owned by the library. No registration necessary.

Art in Embroidery

When: Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Where: Library21c -1175 Chapel Hills Drive at Make (Clean Maker Space)

This four-week course will delve into two needlework techniques, Crazy Quilting and Blackwork.

Crazy Quilting was popular during the Victorian era. Crazy quilts were made from all sorts of fabrics into unrestrained designs, incorporating memorabilia. The class will spend two weeks discovering various embroidery stitches to be used while completing a personal Crazy Quilt square. Each student will complete their own square with embroidery stitches, lace, beads, and other personal memorabilia.

Blackwork is a needlework technique that was popular during the Tudor era. Repetitive geometric patterns are used to create the design. The class will spend the final two weeks working on a blackwork sampler.

Registration is required and is for a four-week course. This class is for ages 18+. Supplies will be provided.

Home Selling Basics

When: Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Where: Library21c -1175 Chapel Hills Drive at B6

This class covers the basics of selling your home. It will provide you with information such as the listing contract, disclosure forms, preparing your home to sell, pricing your home (how the market talks to you about the price of your home), staging, and marketing. It also covers what to look for in the contract when receiving an offer from a buyer and negotiating that offer. Other subjects covered will be the home inspection, inspection objection and resolution, appraisals, and potential stumbling blocks on the way to closing the sale of your home.

Upcycled Pet Toys

When: Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Where: East Library - 5550 N. Union Blvd. at EA Makerspace

Stop by this month to make a new or upcycled toy for your favorite canine or feline friend, or bring in a well-loved toy in need of some TLC for new stuffing, squeakers, and repairs.

While supplies last. No registration is required. Ages 12 and up.

Facebook Business Pages

When: Thursday, April 27, 2017 - 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM
Where: Library21c -1175 Chapel Hills Drive at Petritz Learning Lab

Put Facebook to work for your business by learning the basics of Facebook Business Pages. Create your page, learn to navigate the interface, and get tips on the types of content that drives interest in your business.

Pre-requisite: Students must already have a personal Facebook page and know their login information.

Drawing and Painting Creativity Group

When: Thursday, April 27, 2017 - 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Where: Library21c -1175 Chapel Hills Drive at Make (Clean Maker Space)

Bring your creativity to this monthly gathering. Bring whatever project you are working on and work in a group setting. Local artist and instructor Deb Ross will be on hand to help inspire. Supplies will not be provided. Registration is not required.

Photo-Editing with GIMP

When: Thursday, April 27, 2017 - 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Where: Library21c -1175 Chapel Hills Drive at Petritz Learning Lab

Learn to edit your photos without paying the hefty price tag for professional software like Photoshop or Corel. GIMP is a free downloadable software you can use at home to accomplish most of your photo-editing needs.

In this class, we'll teach you the basics of how to adjust the lighting in your pictures, crop out unnecessary parts, remove red-eye, edit the foreground and background elements, and more.

This class is for advanced computer users who are very comfortable with computer navigation and have experience using a variety of software including Microsoft Office products. Best suited for students 13+; Ages 9-12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Teens and Tweens MAKE at East

When: Thursday, April 27, 2017 - 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Where: East Library - 5550 N. Union Blvd. at EA Makerspace

Every second and fourth Thursday of each month, we will MAKE something in the East Makerspace.

The second Thursday is always a sewing project, and the fourth Thursday is always something different that may incorporate the laser cutter, 3D printer, or other tools available in the East Makerspace.

Today, we will be making Mother's Day Gifts! Laser cut frames, alcohol ink vases, and a fancy schmancy bath scrub! Come check it out!

Fundamentals of Photography for Beginners

Where: Library21c Special Rooms-1175 Chapel Hills Drive at The Studio

The Fundamentals of Photography course will educate beginners on the essential DSLR tools and techniques needed to achieve professional quality images. This course will cover:
+Setting up your camera
+Choosing the right lens for your picture
+How to Photograph indoors and outdoors
+Understanding white balance
+Creative modes and manual mode
+Photographing in RAX and JPEG
+Basic photo composition

I'd like to register my daughter, Gabby (age 9), for the Make Your own Stocking/Ornament on Dec. 10 but I don't see it listed here yet. Please advise.
