The Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District will honor two Colorado women authors at its annual Literary Awards Luncheon at noon on Saturday, April 21 at the Antlers Hotel.

The 2018 Frank Waters Award will be given to Mary Taylor Young. Her formidable knowledge of Colorado and the West is revealed in more than 15 books, her last one marking the centennial of a state treasure, "Rocky Mountain National Park: The First 100 Years." Since 1987, her vivid portrayals - at times touching or humorous but always compelling - have explored the wildlife, landscapes, and people that define the West.

Young is also a creative writing teacher and artist-in-residence at Rocky Mountain National Park. She has worked extensively with children.

The 2018 Golden Quill award, given to a local author, will honor Kathleen "Kay" Esmiol, who co-authored a biography about local legend Fannie Mae Duncan. The book, "Everybody Welcome," was written by Esmiol, but dictated by Duncan, reflecting her voice and vernacular. Duncan was an African-American entrepreneur who owned and operated the famous "Cotton Club" in Colorado Springs, patterned after a New York nightclub of the same name. Many famous black entertainers performed there and Duncan was a local icon for civil rights.

Doors open at 11:00 a.m. and the authors will be signing copies of their books before and after lunch.

The cost for the luncheon is $40 per person or $300 for a table of eight. Meal choices include chicken or vegetarian/gluten-free. Reservation deadline is 5:00 p.m., Friday, April 13. Parking in the garage will be validated.

Payment is due at the time of registration; no refunds. Proceeds benefit Friends, which supports library programs.
