Sassy Sayings: Motivational Embroidery

We’ll be making hand embroidery samplers with sassy sayings as motivation to be AWESOME in 2017!

Designs, hoops, fabric, needles and thread will be provided, but feel free to bring your own!

Connect and Critique Session - members and interested children's writers meet and discuss industry news, problem solve writing issues, and exchange portions of their work for critique and feedback.
SCBWI Mission: The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, is one of the largest existing organizations for writers and illustrators. It is the only professional organization specifically for those individuals writing and illustrating for children and young adults in the fields of children’s literature, magazines, film, television, and multimedia. Our mission is to support the creation and availability of quality children’s books around the world. We accomplish this by fostering a vibrant community of individuals who bring books for young readers to the public including writers, illustrators, translators, editors, publishers, agents, librarians, educators, booksellers, bloggers, enthusiasts and others. We provide education and support for these individuals and the community through our awards, grants, programs and events. We strive to increase the quality and quantity of children’s books in the marketplace, and act as a consolidated voice for writers and illustrators of children's books worldwide.

Maker in Residence: African Instruments and Dance

When: Sunday, January 22, 2017 - 1:30 PM - 4:00 PM

Explanation and demonstration of Congas drums, Djemba (jim-bay), Sakara, Cabasa, and Balafon will be provided. Patrons will get to try out the instruments and learn to play. An explanation and demonstration of West African (Nigerian, Senegalese) music and Dance will be provided. Patrons will get to try out different dance steps and movements. Registration is required, no experience necessary. Patron must be at least 16 years of age to attend.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

For adults wanting to improve their workplace and every day English language skills. Classes provide instruction in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Registration is required. To attend any GED class, you have to come to the orientation first. * If person missed Orientation Day 1, CAN'T attend Day 2.
* Orientation will take TWO DAYS to complete. Not necessary to pre-register, just show up.
* Available locations for each class will be provided during orientation.

MAKE @ East Open Hours

During Open Hours MAKE @ East is available for patrons to work on their own projects while a trained PPLD staff member is present. Equipment and supplies are available on a first come basis.

All patrons in the space must be at least 9 years old. Ages 9-11 must be accompanied by a guardian at all times. Parent/guardian supervision is welcome for all minors over age 12.

Pikes Peak United Way volunteers will be conducting a survey to collect data to represent a one night "snapshot" of those experiencing homelessness.

Paper Crafting Class with Theresa Pingel and Jo Golden

If you've attended one of Theresa Pingel's and Jo Golden's paper crafting classes in the past, you know how much fun they are. Each participant will take home 2 finished projects. Beginners are welcome! All supplies are provided, including basic glue sticks, although if you have a preferred adhesive please bring it with you, and there is no charge, but you must register online at ppld.org or call 382-5347. (Must be 14 or older to attend.)
