Respite from COVID: Winter Adult Reading Program

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – For those seeking an escape from the onslaught of news and the ongoing pandemic, Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD) offers a program full of adventures, entertainment, learning, and prizes, all of which can be enjoyed from the comforts of home.

PPLD will host its annual Winter Adult Reading Program from Mon., Feb. 1, through Wed., March 31. The no-cost program encourages anyone who is 18 years and older to set and complete goals for reading or activities. This year’s theme will be “Tails and Tales,” and all activities can be done from home to ensure everyone’s health and safety right now.

“Each year, Library staff present a great adult-focused program to encourage lifelong learning,” said Amy Rodda, Director of Adult Services for PPLD. “We did make modifications this year due to COVID-19, so all events will be virtual and patrons can get take and make kits from their favorite library for at-home projects.”

The program lineup for 2021 commences with a virtual kick-off party at 2 p.m. on Sun., Jan. 31, where people can register early and earn an additional entry for the grand prize drawing. Registration officially opens online and in-person at PPLD locations on the morning of Mon., Feb. 1.

During the current status of COVID-19 in El Paso County, PPLD safely welcomes back patrons inside its locations to browse the collection, check out Library materials, and use limited services onsite like computers, charging stations, and copy machines. Curbside services still remain available at locations, and patrons can use the Library remotely in many ways, including checking out digital books and audiobooks.

Besides reading, participants can log activities to earn prizes, whether they attend virtual events or pick up take and make kits at one of the libraries. Opportunities include cross-stitching, making a pet leash holder, listening to stories and music from the highlands of Scotland, meeting animal from the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, enjoying a performance from local music group The Reminders during Black History Month, and more.

Adults who participate will be eligible for prizes at various milestones throughout the program, simply by logging their activities or days of reading at least 30 minutes. Prizes for the 2021 program include a chocolate treat, utensil set, and mug, along with a HP Chromebook Laptop for the grand prize drawing.
