Board Membership

Position Description

The Pikes Peak Library District Board of Trustees consists of seven members. The term of office is five years, and vacancies are filled for the remainder of an unexpired term. To encourage greater community participation on the Pikes Peak Library District Board of Trustees, Board members may serve no more than two terms.

Colorado Library Law addresses the composition of Boards in CRS 24-90-108. It specifically defines the power and duties of library boards in CRS 24-90-109. The Board for a library district is considered a governing, as opposed to an advisory Board.

Responsibilities of Pikes Peak Library District Board of Trustees members, as defined by both law and practice, include setting Library policies, setting the Library’s budget, and hiring a Chief Librarian & CEO to oversee the operation of the Library District.

Pikes Peak Library District Board of Trustees members are appointed by a joint committee of the Colorado Springs City Council and the El Paso County Board of Commissioners. Applications for Board of Trustees membership are accepted when a vacancy is upcoming (term will expire), or when a vacancy exists for any other reason. Applications are collected by the Office of the Chief Librarian of Pikes Peak Library District who forwards them to representatives of both appointing entities.
