COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD) presents many options to engage people of all ages and interests across El Paso County. Here are some upcoming opportunities this month:

Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD) is making computers more accessible for all with the launch of the District’s new Chromebooks To Go program. Library cardholders ages 18 and up who have held a PPLD library card for at least 90 days can check out these Chromebooks for 21 days at a time. Users will be able to use this fleet of Chromebooks outside of the Library for productivity and entertainment, whether they are working on class assignments, applying for jobs, taking online skills courses, streaming games and movies, conducting research, or other activities that require access to a computer. For users’ convenience, each device has the Google Enterprise Apps installed to support productivity.
Chromebooks To Go can be renewed up to two times in a row if there are no holds. In the case of late returns, patrons will receive a late fee of $1 per day with a $20 maximum. When three days overdue, a Chromebook To Go will be wiped and disabled. If damaged or lost, the replacement charge is $500.

In honor of Veterans Day, PPLD is recognizing veterans throughout El Paso County with a variety of programs. All Veterans Day programs, as well as information and resources, can be found on the Library’s website.
Patrons of Influence: Military Veterans in El Paso County on Wed., Nov. 15 from 10 – 11 a.m. at East Library will showcase a panel discussion with patrons who are providing positive influences in culture, leadership, and business in El Paso County. A Question and Answer session will follow the discussion. Panelists include Bethann Richards, U.S. Army Signal Corps, retired; Col. Mark Dickerson, U.S. Air Force, retired; Chief Petty Officer Chris Ortiz, U.S. Navy, retired; Marsilino ‘Lino’ Calica, U.S. Army, retired; Col. Cynthia Aki, U.S. Air Force, retired; and 1st Sgt. Carlos V. Gonzalez, Jr., U.S. Army, retired.
Veterans Day Storytime will take place from Fri., Nov. 3 – Fri., Nov. 10 at different libraries throughout the Library District. During these special Storytimes, local veterans from the El Paso County community will make guest appearances to read stories to children ages 3 – 7 and their families and guardians.
Patriotism in America Past and Present on Sat., Nov. 11 from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. at Rockrimmon Library will explore the “Greatest Generation” with author Becky Van Vleet. Van Vleet will discuss her book Unintended Hero, which delves into her father’s battles on the USS Denver in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Registration is recommended for this program.
Veterans Day Poppy Painting will combine artistry with recognition of veterans at different libraries throughout the Library District. Participants will learn the palette knife painting technique and use it to paint beautiful poppy designs in honor of Veterans Day. Registration is required for this program.

The Shivers Fund at PPLD is celebrating 30 years of arts, culture, and fundraising for a cause this year with a special anniversary concert series. The next concert, the Shivers Concert Series 30th Anniversary – Fall Concert, will take place on Fri., Nov. 17. Patrons will enjoy dinner followed by an evening of live musical performances by special guests, including cellist Pamela Chaddon, baritone Ivan Thompson, tenor Eapen Leubner, and pianist Susan Grace. Proceeds help the Shivers Fund support opportunities in El Paso County to celebrate diversity in history, culture, and the arts. The event will be held at the Antlers Hotel beginning at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be at 7 p.m., followed by the concert. Tickets are $75 per person and are available for purchase online or by calling (719) 531-6333, x2391.

During their recent monthly meeting, the PPLD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to discontinue public use of The Hall at PPLD located adjacent to Penrose Library. The Library will phase out this service over the next six months to ensure that they uphold obligations to organizations that have already booked the facility. While reservations can still be made, all events must occur before May 1, 2024. Availability is limited.
