World Almanac for Kids

World Almanac for Kids provides kids with an accessible way to explore a wide range of topics. They can search for a topic they are interested in and learn about it through engaging illustrated articles, videos, Fun Facts, interactive quizzes, and more. This colorful, kid-friendly database is a fun way for kids to start building their online research skills.

Find this resource under the Research and Learn tab of our website and choose “All Databases.

Families can come up with fun learning activities to do together to engage their young learners in developing these skills, or try some of these ideas:

  • Challenge your whole family to look at the “Today’s Feature” or “Featured Topics” sections of the home page and see who can learn a new fact first.
  • Come up with the perfect birthday for a historical figure using the “This Month’s Birthdays” section of the home page. Read about the historical figure and discuss what things they would like to have at their birthday party.
  • Work together to complete one of the projects under the “Science Projects” section.
  • Have someone choose an entertainer, athlete, or writer they like (go to the “Topics” section and look under “Biographies” to find lists of available people). Then challenge everyone else to find one fact about the person that the chooser didn’t know.
  • Watch a video together on a topic of interest. Then see who can remember the most facts from the video.
  • Visit the games section and print out a crossword puzzle or wordsearch and complete it together. Or choose a topic and “Test Your Knowledge” together by taking one of the quizzes.

TumbleBook Library

Kids learn to read through practice, and having a variety of different types of reading experiences supports their learning. Having someone read to them, attending Storytime, reading to themselves, and reading out loud to dogs during programs like Paws to Read are all great ways to support a child’s literacy development. Here’s a new reading experience to add to your toolkit: TumbleBook Library.

elp the children in your life discover a love of reading with read-aloud chapter books and animated, talking picture books. TumbleBook Library offers a variety of read-aloud books for early readers. As the story reads itself, the text currently being read highlights so that kids can learn as they read along. The read-aloud element of these books helps kids learn how to pronounce unfamiliar words.

This platform’s animated picture books provide a unique visual experience as they read and listen. Readers can change the speed of the book so that they can slow it down or speed it up based on their own reading speed.

For added learning experiences, each book comes with a quiz kids can complete after reading, and a 10-question book report form where they can practice their recall skills. There are also regular eBooks, language learning books, interactive puzzle and game books for added learning fun, videos, and more.

Find this resource under the Books & eBooks section of our website.
