ADMINISTRATIVE POLICY
Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD) welcomes every member of the community to use and enjoy the Library’s facilities, collections, programs, and services. To ensure safety and accessibility to resources, all patrons are only permitted to bring in personal belongings that adhere to the following guidelines.
The Library is not responsible for lost or stolen personal items.
On all Library property, Library users are expected to adhere to the Code of Conduct Policy, which includes:
- Keeping walkways, doorways, and exits open and clear.
- Keeping personal belongings with them at all times, except where otherwise designated.
- Not blocking Library resources.
- Inside Library facilities, individual personal belongings should not exceed 22” length x 14” width x 10” height. Any personal belongings that appear to exceed the listed dimension will be referred to the PPLD baggage sizer near each location’s entrance. Storage options are available at Penrose Library.
DISTRICT PROCEDURES
- The Personal Belongings Policy applies to all patrons. Parents, guardians, or designated caregivers are responsible for the personal safety of those they supervise and their belongings.
- Library staff will intervene to ensure that personal belongings comply with access and safety measures. Failure to comply may result in a one-day removal or loss of Library privileges.
- Any item may be disallowed if staff determines it poses a potential health or safety risk for staff or other visitors or if belongings exceed 22” length x 14” width x 10” height.
- The following are not permitted in the Library. Examples include but are not limited to:
- Any objects or items prohibited by local, state or federal law.
- Restricting access to furniture, shelving, or computers by placing belongings on or in front of Library resources.
- Using extra seating or space beyond that of an individual patron.
- Uncontained bedding is not allowed.
- Shopping carts, bicycles, wagons, trash cans, or furniture.
- Bikes should be secured outside in the bike racks provided.
- The following are permitted in the Library. Examples include but are not limited to:
- Wheeled carts, strollers, or wagons to transport children, Library materials, and supplies for meetings or events. These items are not allowed to be used in the Library for other purposes.
- Electric scooters are allowed inside for charging purposes.
- Medically necessary equipment and ADA assistive devices, such as wheelchairs, mobility scooters, canes, etc.
Lost and Found Procedures
PPLD and its employees are not responsible for the security of personal items on Library grounds. All found property will be logged by Library staff and stored by Security. Contact Library staff regarding items lost at the Library. After a specified time, all lost and found items will be donated, destroyed, or turned over to the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Unattended Belongings on Library Grounds
PPLD does not allow individuals to leave personal items on Library grounds.
- Items identified as trash, hazardous, unsanitary, or perishable will be disposed of immediately.
- Library staff will not open backpacks and other similar items.
- Items left in a designated storage area will be disposed of after the Library closes for the day.
- Contact Library staff regarding items lost at the Library.
PPLD reserves the right to restrict the use of its Library facilities and property from patrons who do not abide by the Personal Belongings Policy.
