Why Toys?
What Are Gross Motor Skills?
Gross motor skills are the large-scale movements that involve the whole body — things like walking, running, jumping, climbing, and balancing. These skills rely on the coordination of major muscle groups in the arms, legs, and core, and they form the physical foundation children need to navigate and interact with the world around them.
Why Gross Motor Development Matters
The early years of a child’s life are a critical window for gross motor development, and the benefits extend far beyond physical fitness. As children practice moving, balancing, and coordinating their bodies, they are also building spatial awareness, concentration, and self-confidence.
Strong gross motor skills support a child's ability to sit upright in a classroom, engage in play with peers, and even develop the fine motor control needed for writing. Simply put, giving children plenty of opportunities to move, climb, and explore is one of the best investments you can make in their overall development.
