Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD) will host open houses at eight Library locations from April 8 – April 13 to celebrate National Library Week. Open house events will be held at Cheyenne Mountain, East, Fountain, High Prairie, Monument, Penrose, and Sand Creek libraries, as well as Library 21c. The open houses are unique to each location, offering different activities and prizes for people to enjoy. Each will also feature library tours, refreshments, and prize drawings. The open house event at Penrose Library on Wed., April 10 will also serve as the downtown library’s grand reopening following a two-month closure for shelving updates and renovations. Teens who need volunteer hours for school or for college applications will find a unique volunteer opportunity at Pikes Peak Library District this summer. Volunteers are needed for the Library's 2024 Summer Adventure presented by Children’s Hospital Colorado program in June and July. Participating teens will help with program registration, prize distribution, summer programs, and other activities as needed. Applications for teen volunteers are open now through Wed., May 1 at ppld.org/teens/volunteer.

Homeschool families and families interested in starting homeschooling are invited to Pikes Peak Library District’s annual Homeschool Resource Fair on Fri., April 12 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Library 21c. A wide variety of local exhibitors will be in attendance offering educational and extracurricular opportunities for homeschool families. Attendants will have an opportunity to learn more about local homeschooling services and support, including arts and science activities, sports groups, enrichment programs, tutoring, support groups, and more. There will be engaging hands-on activities for kids in the atrium.

The Library District’s annual Pikes Peak Poetry Summit is on Sat., April 13 from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at The Hall at PPLD. The summit offers a unique opportunity to celebrate writing and self-expression for new and seasoned poets alike. This year’s theme is “Thriving Artists” and writers from across Colorado have been invited to share and celebrate the creative art of poetry. Participants will share ideas, enjoy performances, and hone their writing skills during a variety of workshops provided at no cost. Workshops will cover topics like slam poetry, surrealist techniques, zine writing, performing, the writing process, and more. All ages are welcome.

Makers and tinkerers will gather to celebrate innovation, creativity, problem-solving, and making at this year’s All Pikes Peak Makes on Sat., April 27 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Library 21c. This highly anticipated all-ages event provides an opportunity for community members to get together and celebrate the creative world of making. Making is an umbrella term most often associated with making things in a makerspace, but it can include a variety of other innovative projects, from woodwork and sewing to robotics and model trains. Tables will be set up throughout Library 21c where makers will share projects like 3D prints, LEGO builds, cardboard creations, whittling work, cosplay, and other creative projects, and spend the day learning about science, engineering, and making with other passionate creators. The Library connects its community with astronomy during solar eclipse viewing parties

On Mon., April 8, a solar eclipse will be partially visible from Colorado Springs. Pikes Peak Library District is celebrating the occasion with solar eclipse viewing parties from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Calhan, East, and Rockrimmon libraries. A limited number of safe solar viewing glasses provided by the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society will be available at each viewing party. Light refreshments will be provided, and there will be games and activities. East Library will also have an Open House happening that day from 10 a.m. - noon that visitors can enjoy while they observe this astronomical event.
