The Library Aims for 3,000 New Library Cards During Library Card Sign-up Month District-wide celebration September More info: ppld.org/you-belong

Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD) has a message for El Paso County residents this September during Library Card Sign-up Month: You Belong at the Library. The Library District had 2,875 new library card sign-ups last September and is aiming for 3,000 sign-ups this month. A library card allows people to do more of what they enjoy without overstretching their budget.

Anyone of any age can sign up for a library card and start taking advantage of everything that the Library has to offer. Libraries are community hubs filled with materials, resources, and programs for everyone. Whether someone wants to find new games to play with their family, try new crafts and hobbies, or take a deep dive into their favorite sports culture, our community can find resources and programs to enhance their lives at the Library. Having a library card is the first step to uncovering how You Belong.

Pikes Peak Library District’s (PPLD) All Pikes Peak Reads program is under way, and the community can enjoy special programs in September inspired by this year’s book. This year’s selection is a historic fiction book set in Colorado titled Go As a River, the popular debut book of Colorado author Shelley Read. In October, the author will come to Library 21c for an author talk, Q&A, and book signing. Due to the popularity of this year’s author visit, PPLD has added a second session. To supplement, the Library offers a variety of special All Pikes Peak Reads programs:

  • All Pikes Peak Reads Presents: Shelley Read
    • Sat., Oct. 5, 10 a.m. at Library 21c
    • Sat., Oct. 5, 3 p.m. at Library 21c

  • Introduction to Canning: Water Bath Canning
    • Thu., Sept. 5, noon – 1:30 p.m. at Sand Creek Library
    • Wed., Sept. 25, noon – 1:30 p.m. at Calhan Library

  • Peach Cobbler: A Hands-On Nostalgic Experience
    • Mon., Sept. 9, 1 – 4 p.m. at High Prairie Library
    • Wed., Sept. 11, 6 – 7 p.m. at Library 21c

  • Beneath Blue Mesa: Author talk with David Primus
    • Thu., Sept. 19, 6 – 7 p.m. at East Library

All Pikes Peak Reads is Pikes Peak Library District’s (PPLD) annual community reads program that focuses on celebrating literature, improving community connections, and fostering dialogue across social, cultural, and generational lines. Each year, the Library selects titles that focus on timely topics and plans a variety of community-wide programs. The program concludes with an author presentation and book signing.

The 13th annual Latina Voices program will celebrate the talents and achievements of Latinas in the Pikes Peak region.

The free event will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sat., Sept. 21 at Library 21c, 1175 Chapel Hills Drive.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Maj. Gen. Linda Urrutia-Varhall, a native of Pueblo, Colorado who graduated from the United States Air Force Academy and went on to become the first Latina two-star general in the U.S. Air Force.

Among other accomplishments, Urrutia-Varhall served three secretaries of defense and the director of national intelligence, advising cabinet-level officials, intelligence officers, national intelligence agencies, Congress, and the White House on aligning objectives, developing and executing strategies and policies, and diplomacy initiatives.

Also presenting will be Rubba Ahram, a dedicated public health advocate with 14 years of experience in healthcare, behavioral health, quality improvement, and leadership.

With Colombian and Middle Eastern heritage, Ahram is deeply committed to serving the Latino, immigrant, and underserved populations. As a public health planner for El Paso County, Ahram plays a driving role in fostering community partnerships and promoting community health improvement locally.

In addition, there will be a performance by Ritmo y Sabor Hispano, a folklórico dance group comprised of 20 students from Harrison High School.

According to Director Marcia Bates and co-sponsor Sophia Alberico, “through dance, our group can promote empathy, cooperation, and the ability to share with others culture, traditions, and the affirmation of ethnic identity.”

Coffee and pastries will be served. The event is sponsored by the Colorado Springs Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and hosted by Pikes Peak Library District.
