Think about the cards you carry in your wallet. Credit cards. Membership cards. Gift cards. Insurance cards. Each serves a different purpose, offering access to something we need or want.
But there is one card that does more than any other: a library card.
A library card opens the door to opportunity, creativity, lifelong learning, and resources.
For families, it’s a way to read together, to grow literacy and reading skills vital for a child’s future, even as they delve into magical worlds and hone their imaginations. It’s a way for parents to access expensive toys that are quickly outgrown by toddlers. It’s a way to discover how talking and reading with your child can help support their future academic successes. Through discovery kits, culture passes, events, and programs – a library card is the path to family connection without budget strain.
“Sometimes at home, we have family reading time where we all sit in silence and read books,” a patron writes to Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD).
“Books were getting to be an expensive habit. I was always willing to spend money on children’s books because it’s clearly so good for them. But I have a harder time justifying the cost of each book for myself, and now cost isn’t a concern at all because, duh, libraries exist and are awesome.”
For students, a library card can provide the key to success. With research assistance, online test preparation, study spaces, in-person math tutoring, and 24/7 online tutoring, no student should be stuck on homework or dreading the next big project. For adults, a library card can be a useful tool throughout life: learn a new skill, prepare for a career change, or start or grow a business. With a library card, adults can find grants for nonprofits, citizenship classes, tax preparation assistance, and legal resources. The library card provides research tools for genealogy, or the exact book needed to escape. PPLD offers opportunities without barriers and learning without a price tag.
“The Strategic Services Librarians’ dedication and selfless commitment have made a lasting difference in my entrepreneurial journey,” a patron said. “Their efforts have been instrumental in helping establish my business here.”
And for older adults, the Library is a place of discovery and connection, where friendships are formed; new interests are explored; and curiosity continues to flourish.
“The Library helps fill my time and save money. I hate to say that books and the like are luxuries, as they shouldn’t be,” says another patron. “However, they are luxuries to me right now. I am so very glad that I get to have them.”
At Pikes Peak Library District, we witness these stories every day. We see families gathering for Storytimes and programs, seniors meeting for activities and games, people creating gifts in our makerspaces, teens gaming together, and neighbors finding community.
“I was shown how to fill out a resume and got my first job in a long time. I couldn’t have done it without the Library,” a job seeker said. “If you want to better yourself, succeed in life, and want true, sincere help, give the Library staff a chance. They helped me.”
A library card makes knowledge available to everyone, regardless of age, background, or circumstance.
Every day, library cards unlock stories, opportunities, friendships, and dreams. They connect people to ideas that can shape a future and experiences that can enrich life.
A library card creates possibilities. They are places where people learn, create, connect, and begin again.
So, the next time you pull out your library card, remember that you are holding more than plastic. You are holding a key. A key to new ideas, new experiences, and new possibilities.
