Remember: reading programs aren't just for kids

PPLD kicks off 2019 Winter Adult Reading Program

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – Memories of reading programs likely bring you back to summer days, minutes-spent-reading trackers, and parents actively trying to keep you busy while school was out of session.

But reading programs aren’t just for the young ones in our community.

Pikes Peak Library District kicks off the annual Winter Adult Reading Program on Friday, Feb. 1. The library hopes to remind adults in our community that reading and learning activities are good for patrons of any age.

“There’s this idea of summer reading programs being geared toward children, but each year we try to ensure there is a great adult-focused program with an exciting lineup of activities to encourage lifelong learning in our community,” said Amy Rodda, Head of Adult Services for PPLD. “In addition to helping adults set goals for reading, the 2019 program will feature a lot of entertaining and informative events we think our community will really enjoy.”

The lineup for 2019 features a kick-off party on Saturday, Feb. 2 with a hot chocolate bar and book swap activity at six of the district’s 14 facilities. Participants can also attend various craft classes, book-to-movie screenings, a Native American oral storytelling program, an African drumming exhibition, and more for credit on their reading program game cards.

Adults who participate will be eligible for prizes at various milestones throughout the program. The 2019 grand prize is a Samsung tablet.

“This is such a great program for adults in our community to get to know each other and to challenge themselves,” Rodda said. “We’re hopeful the library can serve as a gathering place for people of all ages to have new and enlightening experiences this winter.”

A full schedule of 2019 Winter Adult Reading Program events can be found at ppld.org/WARP. You can register there and get a printable game card starting Friday, Feb. 1.
