If you are interested in volunteering with us in any of the options below, please complete an application (available online or at any library branch) and return it to the Adult Education office at Penrose Library. Or contact the Adult Education office at lmiller@ppld.org, (719) 531-6333 x2224 for training dates and current openings.

"Speak English" Facilitators

Speak English Facilitators
Speak English is an informal conversation group for adults with intermediate or better English language skills. Experience facilitating small groups is preferred, but not required. Group size varies. Activities may include: discussion of current events, vocabulary instructions, pronunciation practice, interview question practice, etc. Reporting requirements: gather participant attendance and individual registration forms and submit them monthly to the Adult Education division via email.literacy office via email. There is a one year minimum commitment for this position. Orientation is required and offered several times a year.

ESL & Adult Literacy Tutors

ESL & Adult Literacy Tutors
Work one-on-one with an adult, two hours a week, to improve their reading, writing, comprehension, or English language skills. Materials provided. Volunteers are responsible to submit a monthly report to Adult Education division via email. There is a one year time commitment expected when paired with a student. Orientation is required and offered several times a year.

ESL/High School Equivalency (HSE) Classroom Assistants

Assist an ESL or HSE class instructor once or twice a week (mornings or evenings) in a classroom setting. Must have a willingness to assist instructor and students in classroom activities. Activities may include facilitating a small group, one-on-one assistance, writing on the board, making copies, etc. There is a six-month minimum commitment when assigned to a class. Orientation is required and offered several times a year.
