Volunteer Opportunities

If you are interested in volunteering with us in any of the options below, please complete an application (available online or at any library branch) and return it to the Adult Education office at Penrose Library. Or contact the Adult Education office at smaxon@ppld.org, (719) 531-6333, x6451 for training dates and current openings.

"Speak English" Facilitators

Lead an informal conversation group for adults already speaking with intermediate or better English language skills.

We are looking for someone who will:

• Create conversation on varying topics, such as: current events, possible interview questions, etc.
• Instruct in vocabulary and pronunciation
• Adapt to a variety of group sizes and skill levels
• Report attendance data monthly to Adult Education Office, via email
• Gather and submit patron registration forms

SKILLS NEEDED:
• Friendly and outgoing
• Able to communicate clearly
• Skilled at interacting with a wide range of customers of diverse ages/backgrounds
• Responsible, punctual and able to commit to a schedule

OTHER:
• Experience preferred, but not required.
• Orientation and training are required, ongoing support provided. Available several times a year.

Hours:
• Specific day and time varies, based on location and volunteer availability., • Minimum of 6 months, one year preferred.

Change a Life! Be an Adult Literacy Tutor

Change a life! Work one-on-one with an adult, to improve their reading, writing, comprehension or English language skills.

We are looking for someone who will:

• Commit to weekly tutoring time
• Use the provided materials, but adapt to learning styles
• Be patient with all skill levels
• Report data monthly to Adult Education Office, via email

SKILLS NEEDED:
• Friendly and outgoing
• Able to communicate clearly
• Skilled at interacting with a wide range of customers of diverse ages/backgrounds
• Responsible, punctual and able to commit to a schedule

OTHER:
• Orientation and training required—we will teach you what you need to know. Offered several times a year.
• Materials provided by PPLD
• Immediate need! Students are waiting for available tutors.

Hours:
• Day and time coordinated between tutor and student., • Meet with student once a week for two hours., • Minimum of 6 months, one year preferred, when matched with a student.

Change Lives! ESL Classroom Assistants

Change lives! Assist an ESL class instructor once or twice a week, mornings or evenings, in a classroom setting.

We are looking for someone who will:

• Follow directions
• Be willing to assist with all classroom activities, including: instruction, writing on the board, making copies, etc.
• Be patient with all skill levels
• Be comfortable facilitating small group or one-on-one assistance

SKILLS NEEDED:
• Friendly and outgoing
• Able to communicate clearly
• Skilled at interacting with a wide range of customers of diverse ages/backgrounds/cultures
• Responsible, punctual and able to commit to a schedule

OTHER:
• Orientation and training required—we will teach you what you need to know. Offered several times a year.

LOCATION:
• Various library branches as determined by Adult Education office. Some classes are not held at a PPLD facility, but at a community partnership location.
