Current Location:

Occupation(s):
Guidebook writer
Biography:

Susan Joy Paul has hiked, climbed, snow shoed, rappelled, and at times - when the winds above 14,000 feet were screaming - crawled across the state of Colorado, reaching the summits of more than five hundred mountains along the way.

In her first book, Touring Colorado Hot Springs 2nd.ed., Susan took a break to relax and revitalize at thirty-two of the state's best hot springs.

In Hiking Waterfalls in Colorado, Susan visits one hundred and fifty of the state's waterfalls. The research was a labor of love, taking Susan hundreds of miles on foot, climbing tens of thousands of feet up, in search of the best falls. She completed the hikes in one year's time - nearly all of them solo - taking photos, GPS tracks and detailed notes to create vivid and accurate maps and directions. With this book, Susan shares the splendor of these wonderful, water-full, waterfall hikes with like-minded adventurers.

Banks, Marty Mokley

Birth Year (-Died Year):
1960
Birth City:
Lynwood
Birth State:
CA
Current Location:
Colorado Springs, CO
Occupation(s):
Writer
Biography:

Marty Mokler Banks is a children's author, travel writer, editor, tennis player, hockey fan and dog lover.

As a full-time writer, her books and articles show a bit of a split personality--the reality of making the writing life work. Her magazine stories are often about exotic, freakishly amazing places all over the world. She's also co-authored a travel book about her hometown: Insiders' Guide to Colorado Springs (Globe Pequot Publishers, 2011). But long ago, her love of reading morphed into a love of writing fiction... which, once she had kids, transformed into a love of good, inventive, thoughtful and funny children's literature.

Her most recent children's book is G.G. Snowboards (The G.G. Series, Book #1)(Switch Monkey Press, 2013). The series follows the spunky, sassy, eight-year-old G.G. as she explores a new extreme sport in each book. Due out spring 2014 is G.G. Rock Climbs (The G.G. Series, Book #2). In 2012, Marty launched her first chapter book, The Adventures of Tempest & Serena, a charming yet suspenseful adventure that features exploding volcanoes, yaks, dragons and a little bit of magic. The Splatters Learn Some Manners (Harvest House Publishers, 2009), Marty's first published book, is a lively, zany children's picture book and a Colorado Book Award finalist for Children's Literature, 2010.

Marty's writing comes out of her love for reading. She found reading easy to learn, but not exciting until fourth grade, when she discovered an old middle grade novel, The Raft by Robert Trumbull. That book showed her how incredible the world of fiction could be. Since then she's had her eyes in at least one book and sometimes multiple books at a time.

Marty grew up in Southern California in a noisy house with lots of brothers, horse trails and a view of the ocean. After an early, casual foray into barrel racing and riding bareback just for the fun of it, Marty spent most of her elementary, middle and high school afternoons training for horse shows on the weekends. By college, she gave up both her horses and view of water when she moved to Boulder, Colorado and earned a B.S. in journalism from the University of Colorado-Boulder.

After various jobs at magazines and big corporations, Marty spent time with the smart and creative people at the University of Iowa Writer's Workshop. She now freelances travel and marketing writing when not writing children's fiction. Marty is highly involved with the motivated and gung-ho Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI). She lives in Colorado Springs with her family and dogs.
